Eshu is an Orisha that got wrongly known as a deity that practices good and evil according how much alcohol, cigars and bad intentions you would offer to him. People have been learning to be afraid of worshiping Eshu because somehow he would play tricks and mess up your life. All those misinformation took away the free capacity of people to connect with the amazing compassionate Blessings that the true Eshu shares with us, as well as has been empowering a fear based practice.
Lots of confusion emerged from that:
Is Eshu an Orisha? Does Eshu cause harm to others? Are Eshu Spiritual Guides sometimes good and sometimes harmful? Are Eshus luciferian groups of spirits? Are Eshus inferior spirits? Eshu Spiritual Guides are evolved enough to be part of the 7 Umbanda Lines? Is Eshu a trickster deity? Are Eshus obsessor-negative spirits?
The root of the misunderstanding comes from the time of colonization. The idea of Eshu as evil started when Jesuit priests translated the whole bible to the Yoruban language and replaced the word demon with Eshu. They underestimated the power of Eshu as a deity of goodness.
Based upon this colonial mislead action and conception, in modern times a diversity of Orisha's centers decided to bring doubts if Eshu is or not an Orisha, as well as considering the Spiritual Guides of Eshu Line as inferior spirits. Some Orisha's centers even decided to categorize the Spiritual Guides of Eshu according to demonic lines of luciferian forces reproducing the colonial interpretation of Eshu.
All those interpretations has been causing a lot of confusion. Most people believe that the high level Spiritual Guides of Eshu, that come to protect people, are wrongly the obsessor-negative spirits themselves. They don't understand that if you have a wrong-doing intention, the obsserssor-negative spirits would hear and trick you, never Eshu and the Eshu Guides. When you align again your heart with good intentions, Eshu and his spiritual Guides will come to protect you against those obsessor-negative spirits.
Another strange interpretation brings Eshu as an untrustworthy trickster that could behave beyond good and bad depending on mediocre intentions and offerings, opening up many doubts about what is wrong and what is right. This point of view reduces the incredible practical lessons, that Eshu teaches us in his legends for the greatest good, to uncertain excuses to practice harmful actions to our brothers and sisters. Eshu is a loyal brother of the Orisha Ogun and walks by his side through the straight path of goodness, and never guides any crooked path.
Why people feel free to sing to Shiva, but not to Eshu?
In Somatree Unity, we bring the mission to decolonize and transform the fear based way that people created relate to Eshu. We respect the diversity of interpretations, at the same time, it is part of our studies to open space to beautifully vibrate with Eshu and the Orishas with trust and an open heart.
We honor Eshu as the great Orisha that works exclusively with positive forces causing no harm or performing any tricks to his children. We welcome the high level Eshu's Spiritual Guides to protect us against obsessor energies and open our communication with the Divine Forces. The Pomba Giras Eshu’s female Guides carry positive forces as bright as the Caboclas Oshossi’s female Guides.
We have an important place for Eshu's Spiritual Guides inside of the 7 Umbanda Lines.
We understand the Left Line of Eshu is a fundamental energy as important as the other Lines. The high level Spiritual Guides of the Left Line are able to absorb negative energies to be transformed. They work with deep compassion to protect humans, specially the excluded ones who live in the streets. Eshu is a the great counselor Orisha that listen to our prayers closer and carry it to the Creator and the other Orishas.
We are in alignment with other Umbanda centers that consider the Eshu Orisha and his Spiritual Guides as forces of goodness, compassion, and protection.
Salve Eshu! Salve Eshu Spiritual Guides! Salve Pomba Gira Guides!
Laroye! I have faith!
